For the love of Françoise Hardy, Ben Sidran and the TV comedy Twenty Twelve
Among the logs tossed on the conversational bonfire this week to combat mid-June’s British winter you’ll find …
… ‘I Managed Van Morrison’ and other films screaming to be made.
… how it feels to watch someone play from the best seat in the house.
… Françoise Hardy, her unsmiling photos and legions of besotted male admirers (ie us and everyone else).
… the time she met Dylan and Nick Drake.
… Juliette Greco, Edith Piaf and the handful of French stars who made it across the Channel.
… the joy of small venues: “the bigger the gig, the smaller a component of the experience the actual performance is”.
… Elvis Costello’s photographic memory.
… Maria Muldaur with Earl Palmer and Amos Garrett.
… why...

Both French and German music fans seem to be extremely loyal to singers and bands longer than British fans, who I think tend to be more contemporary in their tastes? Many bands from the seventies and eighties can still tour and make a good living. Particularly in Germany.

I could be totally wrong here but on the subject of the Japanese girl idol group, I believe one of the reasons for the huge turnover of members would be that they will probably be discarded once they reach a certain age in a kind of musical Logan’s Run rule, but often disturbingly they will also be let go if they don’t meet body aesthetics too. Many of these groups are routinely monitored for things like weight and will be out if they don’t meet the metrics.

They're wrong about the NME story which appeared in early '75. Nick Kent wrote a quite a moving piece, acknowledging Drake's lack of wider commercial appeal, and then proceeded to analyse the music across his three solo albums. It was Kent's feature article that got me curious about Drake, and marked the beginning of my quest to check him out. I wasn't disappointed. I'm sure there must've been many regular NME readers who did the same. It still took another 10-15 years for the rest of the world to catch up, but give credit where credit's due. Thanks to Kent's article, I'm sure like me, interest Drake began to gather pace
